7th Grade Math / Lesson 5: Inequalities

INEQUALITIES
What will we be learning in this lesson?

  • In this lesson, you will learn about inequalities.
Vocabulary words are found in this purple color throughout the lesson. Remember to put these in your notebook.

Inequalities

  • This section will show you the inequality symbols and have you use them in comparing numbers.

  • The four basic inequality symbols are :

These inequality symbols are used to compare values that are not equal to each other. Notice two of them have an extra line underneath and two of them do not.

Inequalities

  • Place the appropriate symbol between the numbers to compare their values.

    1.  3      6         2.   5.5     5

    3.  0      5         4.   7      3

  • Keep in mind that the open end of the symbol should be directed toward the larger number and the pointed end of the symbol is directed toward the smaller number.

Inequalities

  • Place the appropriate symbol between the numbers to compare their values.

    1.  3   <   6         2.   5.5   >  5

    3.  0   <   5         4.   7     >   3

Inequalities

  • Write the inequality for the following

    1.  6 is less than 12                           2.   8 is greater than or equal to 4

    3.  5 is less than or equal to 10         4.   23 is greater than 19

Inequalities

  • Write the inequality for the following

Inequalities

  • Can you identify the inequality symbols?

  • Can you correctly compare numbers using the inequality symbols?

  • Can you write an inequality from a sentence?

  • Go back to the classroom to get to your homework and any other items you need to attend to.
