7th Grade Math / Lesson 3: Coordinate Plane: Reflection

REFLECTION

What will we be learning today?

  • In this lesson, you will learn how to reflect shapes and rename their vertices.

Vocabulary words are found in this purple color throughout the lesson.
Remember to put these in your notebook.

Reflection
  • Back in Unit 5 we looked at reflecting objects.

Reflecting an object is flipping it over to the other side of a particular line.

  • The object needs to flip during reflections.

Reflection
  • We will now reflect through the coordinate plane and focus on the points.
  • Take the shape below and reflect it over the line labeled "y" (this is the y-axis). Watch what happens to the point.

Reflection
  • What is the ordered pair for the new location of the point?.

Reflection
  • Draw the triangle that has the vertices at (-3,2), (-5,4) and (-5,0). Then reflect the triangle over the y-axis. Label the new points.

Reflection
  • Draw the triangle that has the vertices at (-3,2), (-5,4) and (-5,0). Then reflect the triangle over the y-axis. Label the new points.

  • Can you reflect an object over an axis?
  • Can you rename the points after the reflection?
  • Go back to the classroom to get to your homework and any other items you need to attend to.
