7th Grade Math / Lesson 2: Coordinate Plane: Translation

TRANSLATION

What will we be learning today?

  • In this lesson, you will learn how to translate shapes in a coordinate plane and rename the vertices.

Vocabulary words are found in this purple color throughout the lesson.
Remember to put these in your notebook.

Translation
Back in Unit 5 we looked at translating objects.
  • Translating an object is sliding it across the paper.

  • The shape does not flip or turn at all.

Translation
  • We will now translate through the coordinate plane and focus on the points.
  • Take the shape below and translate it over the line labeled "y" (this is the y-axis). It needs to be translated 5 places to the right. Watch what happens to the point.

Translation
  • What is the ordered pair for the new location of the point?

Translation
  • Draw the triangle that has the vertices at (-3,2), (-5,4) and (-5,0). Then translate the triangle 8 places to the right. Label the new points.

  • Draw the triangle that has the vertices at (-3,2), (-5,4) and (-5,0). Then translate the triangle 8 places to the right. Label the new points.

  • Can you translate an object?
  • Can you re-label the points on the object?
  • Go back to the classroom to get to your homework and any other items you need to attend to.
