7th Grade Math / Lesson 1: Patterns and Variable Expressions

Patterns
What will we be learning in this unit?

  • This unit will review some basic terms and concepts needed to continue through this math class.
  • Today's lesson will go over patterns and variable expressions.

Patterns

  • Describe the following pattern

    50, 47, 44, 41, ...

  • Continue the following visual pattern

    R, B, G, G, B, R, R, ...

Patterns

  • Describe the following pattern

    50, 47, 44, 41, ...

    Solution : subtract 3 from previous term. 38, 35, 32, 29, ...

  • Continue the following visual pattern

    R, B, G, G, B, R, R, ...

Solution : colors repeat forward then backwards. The next three colors are blue, green, green.

Patterns

  • Determining if a pattern is linear or nonlinear

  • Linear: the difference from one number to the next is exactly the same through the entire sequence of numbers.

  • Nonlinear: the difference from one number to the next is not exactly the same through the entire sequence of numbers.

  • Determine whether the patterns are linear or nonlinear.

    A. 54, 52, 50, 48, ...
    B. 34, 36, 39, 43, 48, ...

    A. 54, 52, 50, 48, ...        linear. Decreases each time by 2
    B. 34, 36, 39, 43, 48, ...  nonlinear. Increases by 2 then 3 then 4 ...

Variable Expressions

  • Variable expression: must contain at least one variable and at least one operation.

  • Which of the following are variable expressions?

    A. 3 + 6              B. M - 2

    C. 4 + s = 5       D. 8x

Variable Expressions

  • Variable expression: must contain at least one variable and at least one operation.

  • Which of the following are variable expressions?

    A. 3 + 6              B. M - 2

    C. 4 + s = 5       D. 8x

    Solution :

A is not. It does not contain a variable.
B is. It has a variable and an operation.
C is not. It has an equal sign which makes it an equation.
D is. It has a variable and an operation.
