7th Grade Math / Lesson 1: Exact vs. Estimate

EXACT VS. ESTIMATE
What will we be learning in this lesson?

  • In this lesson you will look at when it is appropriate to find an estimated answer as opposed to finding the exact answer.

Vocabulary words are found in this purple color throughout the lesson. Remember to put these in your notebook.

EXACT VS. ESTIMATE

  • Sometimes it is not necessary to find exact answers for certain problems that involve numbers. Finding an estimated answer can be just as meaningful. It is close enough to the exact answer to give you the information that you need.

    Think about the following:

    1. Would you need to know exactly how far it would be to fly from Pittsburgh to Seattle? Or would an estimated distance be good enough?

    2. Would you need to know exactly how much money you would need to pay for tickets to a concert? Or would an estimated answer be good enough?

EXACT VS. ESTIMATE

  1. Would you need to know exactly how far it would be to fly from Pittsburgh to Seattle? Or would an estimated distance be good enough?

You would probably be fine with an estimated distance from Pittsburgh to Seattle.

  2. Would you need to know exactly how much money you would need to pay for tickets to a concert? Or would an estimated answer be good enough?

You would probably want the exact answer so you can be sure that you have enough money to buy the tickets.
