7th Grade Math / Lesson 1: Analyze Patterns

Analyzing Patterns What will we be learning in this lesson? In this lesson, you will learn how to analyze patterns and represent them as graphs and equations. Vocabulary words are found in this purple color throughout the lesson. Remember to put these in your notebook.

Analyzing Patterns Look at the numbers in the table. Do you see the pattern? Look for the relationship between the x and the y-values. All pairs of numbers should have the same relationship. Looking at the first pair of numbers, you might say that the relationship is that you multiply the x by 3. 2*3 = 6. But this does not work for the rest of the numbers. So you need to look for some other relationship between them.

 Analyzing Patterns Do you notice that all of the y-values are 4 more than the x-values? 2 + 4 = 6 3 + 4 = 7 6 + 4 = 108 + 4 = 12                  This is the pattern. The y-values are 4 more than the x-values. This gives us the equationx + 4 = y

Analyzing Patterns Let's look at a new pattern. Let's say that the y-values are 4 times the x-values. Fill in the table with the y-values that fit this description.

Analyzing Patterns If the y-values are 4 times the x-values, the table would look like this: So the equation would be 4*x = y

Analyzing Patterns To graph the patterns, just take the values out of the table and use them as ordered pairs.

Can you identify the pattern is a set of numbers? Can you list pairs of numbers that fit a given pattern? Can you graph a pattern and write the equation that represents the pattern? Be sure to go back to your classroom to get any homework assignments or other activities you need to attend to.
