7th Grade Math / Lesson 10: Symmetry

SYMMETRY
What will we be learning in this lesson?

  • In this lesson, you will learn about symmetry of shapes.
Vocabulary words are found in this purple color throughout the lesson. Remember to put these in your notebook.

Symmetry

  • If something has symmetry, it is said to have a balance to it and is pleasing to the eye. A type of symmetry is called line symmetry.
  • Line symmetry is when you can fold the design and the two sides of the design end up being identical (congruent). In other words, the same.
  • Things that are symmetric are actually the same on each side of the figure.
  • When this happens, there is a line of symmetry that can be drawn. This is the line that cuts the design into two shapes that are identical.

Symmetry

  • Determine if the shapes are symmetric. If they are, draw the line of symmetry.

Symmetry

  • Determine if the shapes are symmetric. If they are, draw the line of symmetry.

  • Determine if the shapes are symmetric. If they are, draw the line of symmetry.

  • Can you identify symmetric figures?
  • Can you draw a line of symmetry?
  • Go back to the classroom to get to your homework and any other items you need to attend to.
