Major cities: Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Roswell and Santa Fe

Admission to union: The 47th State

Date entered the union: January 6, 1912

Origin of state name: Named after the country of Mexico.

Nicknames: The Land of Enchantment

Bordering states: Arizona, Colorado and Texas, with Mexico on the south.

State bird: Roadrunner
