This signing took place almost two years after the Battle of Yorktown, the last major battle of the war. At the Battle of Yorktown on October 17, 1781, General Lord Cornwallis surrendered his British Army to General George Washington's Army combined with French forces led by General Comte de Rochambeau. In the Treaty of Paris, Britain acknowledged the 13 colonies to be free, sovereign and independent States. The treaty established boundaries between the United States and British North America. It granted fishing rights to United States fishermen in the Grand Banks, off the coast of Newfoundland and in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
