American Revolution:American Revolution Video Index Events Leading to the Revolution Battle of Lexington and Concord Washington Crossing the Delaware |
After General Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware River, he defeated the Hessian troops in the Battle of Trenton. After capturing Trenton, General Washington led his army back across the Delaware into Pennsylvania. In response, General Lord Cornwallis left Princeton with 8,000 men to attack Washington and his 6,000 troops at Trenton. By the time the British reached Trenton it was nightfall and General Cornwallis called of the attack until the next morning. During the night, Washington decided that rather than stand and fight, they would take the backroads and attack Princeton. By 2:00 am General Washington's army was on the move. Five hundred soldiers were left behind to keep the camp fires burning so the British would not suspect they had left. The Battle of Princeton took place on January 3, 1777. The British had left the town largely undefended. The Americans drove the British out of Princeton before Cornwallis had a chance to return to defend the city. As Cornwallis returned to the city, Washington decided it was best to evacuate Princeton and more his troops to Morristown. After the battle, Cornwallis abandoned many of his posts in New Jersey, and ordered his army to retreat to New Brunswick. Check out these videos to learn more about the Battle of Princeton. |
