Battle of Bennington

The Battle of Bennington took place on August 16, 1777, in Walloomsac, New York, about 10 miles from Bennington, Vermont. The British General Burgoyne was sent to raid a supply depot in Bennington to get horses, draft animals and other supplies. He believed the town to be only lightly defended by the colonists. Unknown to Burgoyne, General John Stark and about 2,000 militia had been sent to stop him at Walloomsac, and were hiding in the woods. The battle was an important victory for the colonists. Burgoyne's army was seriously depleted with 207 dead and 700 captured. After the battle, many of Burgoyne's Native Americans returned home, further reducing his forces. Lastly, it deprived him of much needed supplies. This helped contribute to Burgoyne's eventual surrender at the Battle of Saratoga.
