Ligaments are tough, fibrous tissue that connect one bone to another bone, and form a joint. Ligaments provide joint stability, and a limited range of motion at the joint. They generally do not provide the same level of joint movement as muscles. A major function of ligaments is to prevent excessive range of motion that might damage a joint.
