The throat is behind the mouth, and includes the pharynx connecting into the esophagus and trachea (windpipe). Since both food and air pass through the pharynx, it is considered part of the digestive system and respiratory system. The throat provides a major digestive function. When food is swallowed, the epiglottis, a flap-like elastic cartilage, closes over the windpipe. This ensures that food enters the esophagus, and not the windpipe.
