War at Sea during the Civil War

The Civil War was also fought at sea. In addition to delivery food and munitions to the troops, ships were armed with cannons for battle at sea. These ships were used to fight other ships, or to attack forts located along rivers and the ocean coast. The Civil War saw the first iron-sided ships and the first submarine.
