Abe Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves. He was assassinated (killed) in 1865. We celebrate his birthday on February 12 with a holiday.

Abraham Lincoln is remembered every day with his picture on the United States Penny and on the Five Dollar Bill.

Lincoln Monument

The Lincoln Memorial (right) is located in Washington, D. C. and was built in honor of his memory.

Inscribed on the memorial are the words:

"IN THIS TEMPLE
AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE
FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION
THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
IS ENSHRINED FOREVER."
