Koi fish are ornamental domesticated varieties of the common carp fish. Koi is the Japanese word for carp. The carp is originally native to central Europe and Asia. Various carp species were domesticated and bred in ancient China for food. The carp was introduced to Japan about 400 to 600 years ago. Now, these Koi are mostly bred for their color.
