The sea pen is a family of 14 different species of marine cnidarians found in tropical and temperate oceans of the world. They are sometimes called "soft corals" along with sea whips and sea feathers. Sea pens prefer deep waters where they are less likely to be uprooted. Their name comes from the fact they look like an old feather quill pen. Sea pens are made up of several parts called polyps. Each polyp provides a specific function to the organism as a whole. For example, one polyp is the stalk. Another polyp is the feeding structure, while another polyp provides for reproduction. Play the following videos to learn more about the sea pen.
