The name toad specifically refers to a family of amphibians defined as "true toads." True toads are native to every continent, except Australia and Antarctica. Their habitat includes a variety of environments from deserts to rainforests. People often confuse toads and frogs. Toads are generally thought to live in dry habitats (e.g., deserts) and frogs in water habitats (e.g., ponds). Although this difference is not always true, the real differences are harder to explain, and in reality may not be meaningful. Some people use the terms interchangeably.
