The neck muscles support the head, and allow for head and neck movement. They can be divided into anterior (front) neck muscles and posterior (back) neck muscles. Of the two areas, the posterior is more muscular. There are many muscles involved in head and neck movement. These muscles connect within the head and neck, and many of them connect into the shoulders. Five major muscles in the back of the neck are the trapezius, levator scapula, splenius, suboccipitals, and posterior cervical muscles. Interested in learning more about neck muscles?
