Cardiac Muscle and the Heart

Cardiac muscle is an involuntary, striated muscle found only in the walls of the heart. The coordinated contraction of cardiac muscle pumps blood from the atria and ventricles to the blood vessels of the circulatory system.

The muscle of the heart, also known as myocardium, is the middle and thickest layer of the heart wall. It is made of cardiac muscle. The myocardium, and thus cardiac muscle, forms the majority of the heart wall.
