Glands are organs in the body that release hormones used to control other bodily functions. A variety of glands aid in the digestion process. For example, the salivary glands produce saliva in the mouth. Enzymes in the saliva provide the first stage of chemical digestion. Glands in the stomach secrete gastrin that stimulates the stomach to produce gastric juices. Glands in the small intestine secrete secretin in response to acid chyme from the stomach. This stimulates the pancreas to produce sodium bicarbonate neutralizing the acid. It also stimulates production of CCK, triggering the gallbladder to release bile and the pancreas to produce pancreatic enzymes. Interested in learning more about the digestive glands?
