Equations are used to solve problems like: "some number added to 8 gives 14" This is mathematically represented as: "x + 8 = 14" Symbols, in this case "x", that are used for unknowns are called variables. When working with variables, it can be helpful to use a letter to represent a symbol. For example, let "n" be the number of people in a movie theater; let "t" be the time it takes to travel to the theater; and, let "d" be the distance from my house to the theater.
