Sacrum - Anterior or Front View
The name sacrum is based on the Latin word sacer or "sacred." The sacrum was consider a sacred bone because it protected the reproductive organs.
As can be seen in the figures on the right, the sacrum is somewhat triangular in shape. The upper part of the sacrum connects with the last lumbar vertebra at the base of the spine. On the left and right, the sacrum connects with the two hip bones of the pelvis. At the bottom of the sacrum is the coccyx or tailbone.
A primary role of the sacrum is in forming the back or posterior wall of the pelvis where it strengthens and stabilizes the pelvis. |
