The willow ptarmigan is native to Alaska and northern Canada. Its preferred habitat is tundra and open forests or shrub meadows. During the summer, the male has a brown head and neck with a white breast. During the winter, the bird is entirely white, except for its black eyes, bill and outer tail. The bird's feet are heavily feathered, acting like snow shoes, helping it walk without sinking into the snow. The willow ptarmigan is the Alaska State Bird.
