Shot Heard Around the World

The phrase "the shot heard 'round the world" has come to represent the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. The phrase is from the opening stanza of a Ralph Waldo Emerson poem the "Concord Hymn." The poem describes the Battles of Lexington and Concord at the beginning of the American Revolution. The entire stanza is:

"By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled;
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard 'round the world."

Emerson wrote the "Concord Hymn" for the dedication of the battle monument, "The Minuteman," near the North Bridge. The stanza is inscribed at the base of The Minute Man statue.
