The killdeer is native to most of Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Killdeers are good actors. If a predator gets too close to their nest, the killdeer use a "broken-wing act" to distract the predator. The bird will walk away from its nest holding its wing in a position as if broken. It will then flap around on the ground emitting a distress call. The killdeer will try to convince the predator that they are easy prey and attract them away from the nest.
