The newt is a species of salamander native to North America, Europe and Asia. Newts live much of their lives under water. Newts have slender bodies, short legs and long tails. They are green, brown, or black above, with a yellow, orange or red underbelly. Their skin secretes a poison that is toxic to predators. Newts have a very interesting capability. If injured or damaged, they can regenerate body parts such as limbs and even heart muscle. Also check out our videos on the Fire Belly Newt, Paddle Tail Newt and Palmate Newt. Play the following videos to learn more about the newt.
