Muscle Reflexes

A muscle reflex, or reflex action, is a very fast, involuntary muscle contraction. This reflex is what causes you to jerk your hand away after touching a hot stove. Read on to learn more about muscle reflexes, and its role in quickly responding to stimuli.

Muscle Reflexes A reflex action differs from the normal muscle contraction as the brain does not initiate the contraction. The reflex action is much faster since the muscle contraction response is initiated at the spinal cord, through reflex pathways. By the time the stimulus reaches the brain, the muscle contraction has already responded to the stimulus.
