Introduction to Money

We use money to buy things. The type of money, or currency, differs from one country to another. In the United States, we use Pennies (Cents), Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Half dollars and Dollars.

Money as Coins

The decimal separates dollars from cents. Cents exist as coins, including penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar and dollar. Half dollar and dollar coins are not very common.

Examples:

$0.10 means 10 cents

$1.25 means 1 dollar and 25 cents

$3.30 means 3 dollars and 30 cents

Penny = 1 cent  (1¢)
Nickel = 5 cents (5¢)
Dime = 10 cents (10¢)
Quarter = 25 cents (25¢)
Half Dollar = 50 cents (50¢)
One Dollar ( $1.00 ) = 100 cents (100¢)
