The numbers you add are called addends. The result you get on adding is called the sum or the total of these addends. The sign of addition is " + ", and is read as "plus".

There are different ways to read and write addition sentences.

Example: Add 235 and 614.

Different ways of writing :

        *  235 added to 614 equals 849.
        *  235 plus 614 equals 849.
        *  The sum of 235 and 614 is 849.

Types of addition :

1. Addition without regrouping.
2. Addition with regrouping.

1. Addition without regrouping:

Luke and Tara were playing a video game. Luke scored 137 points and Tara 142 points. How many points did they score in all?
Luke's score = 137
Tara's score = 142
Points they scored in all = 137 + 142.
Let us add 137 and 142.
1.  Arrange the addends one above the other and show 137 and 142 using squares.

2.  Add ones.

3.  Add tens.

4.
Add hundreds.
Addition

Luke and Tara scored 279 points together.

2. Addition with regrouping :

Luke and Tara were playing a video game. Luke scored 137 points and Tara 146 points. How many points did they score in all?
Luke's score = 137
Tara's score = 146
Points they scored in all = 137 + 146.
Let us add 137 and 146.
1. Arrange the addends one above the other and show 137 and 146 using squares.
