| The United
States and Mexico disagreed over the border between the
countries. Mexico never recognized Texas as a separate
territory, and the United States wanted Texas as a U.S.
territory. In May, 1846, the United States declared war
on Mexico. |

| The United
States armies led by General Zachary Taylor, General
Winfield Scott and Captain Fremont eventually defeated
the Mexican army led by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. |

| As a result of
the war, Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande River as the
boundary between Texas and Mexico. Mexico also gave the
United States the land consisting of California, Nevada,
Utah and part of Arizona. |
